As the grandson of Guiseppe Rossi, the great 19th century Florentine impressionist painter, Roberto Cavalli was destined to be a great artiste . As a student at the Florence Art Academy in the early 1960s, Cavalli’s skills in textile printing were already garnering him attention in fashion when he caught the eye of major Italian hosiery factories—his skill and innovation in textile printing would bring him to the forefront of the fashion world.
In 1970, Cavalli showed his first collection of ready-to-wear in Paris and by 1972, opened his first boutique in Saint-Tropez. Cavalli continued to experiment with textiles in 1994 he invented a technique for sandblasting denim to reaffirm his place at the cutting edge of fashion.
