Amouage is a luxury perfume house established in Oman in 1983 by the Sultan of Oman, who hoped to revive and redefine the ancient Omani art of perfumery. Amouage (the name is a mash-up of "amour" + an Arabic word meaning "waves") uses the traditional materials of Middle Eastern perfumery, such as frankincense and myrrh, but the perfumes are developed by perfumers from the major Fragrance & Flavor companies and are geared towards an international clientele.

Their first fragrance, Amouage (now known as Amouage Gold), was developed by renowned nose Guy Robert, who referred to it as his symphony and the crowning touch of his career. Subsequent releases include Amouage Gold for men (1983), Ubar (1995, relaunch 2009), Dia (2002), Ciel (2003), Esprit d`Amouage (2004), Asana (2005, limited edition), Arcus (2005), Cirrus (2006), Reflection Man & Reflection Woman (2007).In 2006-7, Amouage began a "complete makeover" intended to increase international brand awareness and strengthen the line`s luxury appeal. At that time the fragrance offerings were streamlined and the brand adopted a standard bottle design (see above).
History of the Amouage brand
Lead by the CEO, David Crickmore, for the last ten years, Amouage adopts an inventive approach to all its creations. Along with Creative Director, Christopher Chong, they have together reinvented the brand aiming to render it appealling to today’s international consumers.Christopher is devoted to creating finely blended perfumes using only the highest quality and the most rare ingredients, sourced from around the world. Amouage perfumes are developed according to Christopher’s detailed and inspirational brief, which is then assimilated by world-recognised perfumers in Paris, Grasse, Geneva and New York.
Each perfumer then attempts to encapsulate the essence of the creative brief into a fragrance by sending a vast array of submissions to Christopher for a demanding evaluation. The perfumers, with whom Chong chooses to work, have an intimate understanding of how to interpret his inspirational directions into the luxury fragrances Amouage has in its portfolio today.Chong always seeks to find unusual or innovative elements in his creations. Even though they may fit into an established perfume genre, he always adds his unique signature, which renders it immediately identifiable as Amouage.
Florals are multi faceted, especially in the base notes; spices and woods are used in curious juxtapositions; and rare ingredients are often used in the heart and base notes. The strength of the brand therefore lies in its creative integrity, since it makes its own trends, as opposed merely to following the flock.
